About Us

Our Mission

Skill, Compassion, Education

Skill - Veterinary dermatology is a unique field requiring a keen eye for pattern recognition of skin disorders, special techniques to obtain optimal microscopic samples, a depth of knowledge of disease processes, and an understanding how to manage or hopefully cure these conditions. Dr. Vogel has that skill and works hard to stay current in an evolving field.

Compassion - Our pets can suffer from their dermatologic conditions, and this weighs on our lives as their parents. Dr. Vogel strives to listen to you, learn your goals, and work with you to help your pet.

Education - You need knowledge about your pet's disorder before selecting diagnostic and treatment options. Dr. Vogel helps you make educated decisions after being empowered through interactive conversation about your pet's condition.

What is a Specialist?

A specialist is an individual who is board certified in a veterinary specialty; they have graduated from a veterinary school followed by several years of advanced training in a specialized field of veterinary medicine. Board certification is awarded if, or when, the individual demonstrates an advanced level of knowledge and skill by successfully passing a 2-day certification examination developed and administered by an AVMA-Recognized Veterinary Specialty Organization.

The specialist's expertise complements that of your veterinarian. You may be referred to a veterinary specialist if diagnosing or treating your pet's health problem requires specialized equipment and/or expertise that your veterinarian does not have.

It's critical that you, your veterinarian, and the veterinary specialist communicate and work together to provide the best care for your pet.

Why a Dermatologist?

Your family veterinarian (general practitioner) is the front-line for all medical problems including dermatitis. In fact, dermatologic problems (skin infections/hot spots, ear infections, skin allergies) are reported as the top 3 medical conditions in dogs presented to a general practitioner veterinarian.

If your pet’s skin or ear problems are persistent or recurrent, then you may want to talk to your veterinarian and collectively determine if a referral to a dermatology specialist is indicated. Skin and ear infections are very common in dogs and cats, and we are seeing a great increase in resistant bacteria involvement. Dogs and cats with suspected allergies require a systematic approach for proper diagnosis to help guide appropriate and often life-long therapy early in the course of the disease process.

Autoimmune conditions should consider referral sooner as these can be life threatening. Hormone imbalances (e.g. low thyroid, cortisol excess, etc.) all eventually have clinical manifestations on the skin, and a veterinary dermatologist may help prevent misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatments.

Who is Dr. Vogel?

Dr. Jeff Vogel grew up watching his father, a Cornell University trained veterinarian, practice in a private clinic attached to his home.

He followed the legacy path and went to Cornell for 10 long years of education in "sunny" Ithaca, NY. There he met his wife, Kristin, and they now have 3 awesome kids.
